Last day in Nepal; long trek home

Today Shankar drove Cynthia and I to the Minister of Health and Population.  He had to go to a meeting, and we told him we would walk home.  In typical and universal ministry style, we sat down 5 minutes before our exit meeting for 9 am.  No one showed for 20 minutes, and the first 3 who did proceeded to sit down at their computers and check their email.  There was some laughing but no one noticed we were there.  Finally a woman came in who knew what she needed and then told us we had to wait until 10 am when the person would arrive who knew how to operate the printer.  Then she changed her mind and gave me a blank form to complete that said "DEMO" at the top.  It continued from there with a few more gliches, finally we filled out what she needed, and we headed for the hotel.

The walk home was our first long walk through the main area of town.  We saw a sea of blue tarps that was a covered market area.  Not sure if they are re-located from permanent but now dilapidated buildings, or if this is always here.  It looked a bit too dark to want to walk down there.

We finally got to the Thamel area and walked around.

Some of the streets looked like they ought to be avoided in the event of a quake.

We wandered through a garden near our hotel.  Zoom into the middle of the photo for a surprise.

Beautiful tree.

Beautiful flowers.

There are 2 wooden feet in the bar for climbers to sign who make it to the top of Mt. Everest.  It is a short and elite list of some of the best climbers in the world who stayed at the hotel.  Notice the last name on the left, our auspicious surgeon.  Before the waiter could stop him, the deed was done, and he is on the list.

Nepali crow, waiting for treats.  He was very friendly!

Up close; she is very serious.

Last day of work; goodbyes and dinner out

Last day at work.  Lots of collaboration.  Heard a talk by Tom.

This patient is prone for debridement and flap for a sacral decubitus ulcer.

Shankar, Kiran, resident, and Tom all working together on a burn patient.

Patient with Treacher-Collins.  She has had surgery before, and the scar on the left side of her face contracted severely and has pulled down her left orbit.  She cannot close that eye.  She is only 14 years old.

Dr. Tom evaluating the patient.

Results - her mouth can close, her nose looks better, and she can partially close her left eye.

Dinner out with the crew...

Food as hot as you can stand it ...

And the rest of the crew.  Will miss everyone!
